The honest questions
Where does the planet data come from?
NASA's Exoplanet Archive, the official catalog of confirmed exoplanets, queried October 2026. The full set of 4,829 well-measured worlds ships with this page, so the finder works instantly with no API calls and keeps working even if NASA's servers hiccup.
What does "est." mean next to a planet's size?
Some planets were discovered by the wobble method (radial velocity), which measures mass but not size. For those, we estimate the radius from the mass using a rocky-planet mass–radius relation and flag it honestly. Measured sizes, from transits, carry no flag.
How is the match score computed?
Every planet must first pass your hard filters: size, maximum distance, and star type. Then it scores up to 99 on closeness to your targets. Nearby worlds outrank distant ones, temperatures inside your range beat those outside it, and calm sunlike or orange-dwarf stars earn a small bonus.
Does a high match mean the planet is habitable?
Not quite. Equilibrium temperature assumes a bare rock with no atmosphere. A thick blanket of air, like Venus has, changes everything. Treat a high score as "worth a closer look," not as a confirmed second Earth.
